Medicinal Plants Herbarium

Herbarium (plural: herbaria) is a collection of dried preserved samples that documents the identity of plants. Plant samples are collected from field, spread on absorbent papers like newsprint, usually dried in plant press, mounted on sheets and preserved in cabinets. These mounted samples then labeled with detailed data such as scientific name, altitude, place and time of collecting. See the sample.
Herbarium may cover all plant groups and all geographic regions. The number of species may vary from a few hundred to several millions.
According to Index Herbariorum (http://sciweb.nybg.org2/IndexHerbariorum.asp) there are 13 recorded herbaria in Iran, among those, IRAN and KAR are the most ancient ones.
A herbarium may cover four main services:
1. Identifications of plants; keying out the samples with Floras books and also comparing them with wide already samples let botanists identify species. In several cases it resulted in discovering new species.
2. A place for carrying out botanical projects like floristic, phytosociology, ethnobotany and ….
3. Teaching for interested students in botany or other attributed ones. Ideally, this is carrying out jointly in the field and botanical gardens.
4. Preserving the voucher specimens. Of these, type specimens are the most important. In addition, specimens which have been examined for recorded plants, phytochemistry, and chromosome number should be deposited in a herbarium.

ACECR Central Herbarium of Medicinal Plants is located in Halejerd region, Karaj, Alborz province. It has been established in 2006. Collecting the aromatic and medicinal plants is emphasized in this herbarium.
